Hi, thanks for visiting. I'm a writer, editor, and author, as well as a lecturer at the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism. For 20 years, I wrote features and narrative stories for Sports Illustrated, where I was a Senior Writer.
I've written four books, including The Art of a Beautiful Game and One Shot at Forever, and contributed to The New York Times Magazine, among other publications. Six of my stories have been optioned for film and seven have been reprinted in the Best American Sports Writing anthology. I was a finalist for a National Magazine Award, appeared in The Best American Magazine Writing, and won the 2018 Dan Jenkins Medal for Excellence in Sportswriting, given annually to the best feature story in the country. In 2020, the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) honored me as its "Professional of the Year."
In the spring and summer, I led a Cal team partnering with the New York Times to cover COVID-19 and its effect in California. I'm currently working on a book as well as writing and editing projects.
